The Stayer was founded in 1896 and was operated by Robert W. and Mittie Morgan until 1902 when Mittie took sole responsibility for the newspaper. In 1903, George A. Brandon purchased the newspaper and renamed it The Canyon City News. In 1908, Reuben Aubrey Terrill purchased the newspaper and renamed it the Randall County News.
